Scribe

The House of Words, Dr Johnson’s House, London

Summer 2006

Scribe was a site-specific work installed in the garret of Dr Johnson’s House in London as part of the exhibition The House of Words. Made in response to the various activities of Dr Johnson and his amanuenses in this same space, the artist created a mise-en-scène of various books, quill pens and papers that littered the table top, covered in a delicate layer of Wedgwood Blue Jasper clay dust.

The work spoke of the shared histories of Jasper Blue and Dr Johnson’s contribution to our literary culture, as well as of the layering of time and the opaque nature of memory.
